VM ALERT & POLICY
WHAT IS VM?
V.M. is vegetable or vegetative matter. This is material like grass, hay, weeds sticks, leaves, & anything else that grows from the earth that a to-be-sheared animal manages to get all caught up in the wooly goods during daily life of a farm animal.
Many commercial mills are able to use a combination of chemical processing & high heat to essentially burn out any vegetable matter. This is not particularly environmentally friendly, cheap, or easy to do at home.
Currently, The Woundry relies primarily on hand processed wool - from sheep fleece to skein in (literal) house.
During hand processing, most VM is removed during skirting, picking, and scouring the fleece. More shakes loose during dying and carding.
At this point any VM remaining is the product is most likely cleaner than any salad you've consumed, but odds are good that a small portion of it will still be present.
It's completely safe to handle but occasionally annoying to work around or pick out - if this is a deal breaker for you, please pay attention to the item descriptions and reach out directly with VM questions related to any product.
I'd be happy to direct you to an acrylic or mill wool based product that I can guarantee will be VM free!
